Building a Sub-Surface Magnetic Gesture Lock Using an 8x8 Hall Sensor Array and Teensy 4.1

Hidden locks have long captivated makers and security enthusiasts alike. Traditional mechanical implementation typically relies on concealed levers or hidden keyways, while basic electronic variants frequently utilize single magnetic reed switches buried inside an enclosure. However, simple magnetic mechanisms suffer from a significant vulnerability: anyone sweeping a strong neodymium magnet across the chassis can instantly trip the release mechanism.

Sub-surface Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) solves the uniqueness problem, but it brings its own trade-offs. RFID receivers operate on high-frequency electromagnetic signals that can be sniffed, cloned, or completely blotted out if the enclosure requires metallic electromagnetic shielding. To bridge the gap between covert mechanical operation and modern cryptographic authentication, embedded developers can utilize dynamic magnetic field imaging to build a fully concealed lock powered by spatial magnetic gestures.
